New Painting WIP - Seashell

It has been a while since I posted a new painting.  I had a few days off from work around the holidays and I started this one.  It is 18x24 inches and that is a very large painting for me.  The reference photo is from WetCanvas and I have just started putting some color in the shell.  The shell and reflections were masked and the background has about 10-12 layers of thin color and then a bit of splattering on the foreground sand.  I am continuing to slowly work on the snow leopard also and will post an update soon.

This is a great start, Vicki. This will be another of your great paintings I am sure.

This is going to be stunning, Vicki! All those then layers look like airbrush. You must have the patience of a saint!

Thank you Christiane. The tough part is hoping that the actual painting turns out OK after spending a week painting the background.
Thank Laure. When I started painting one of the first people that I started studying was Catherine Anderson and her many layered paintings. This only has a few layers compared to her work but you can get such wonderful subtle color changes. The hardest part is waiting for the paper to dry inbetween layers.

Looking good so far!
Can't wait to see how you complete it - but with a week on the background, guess I'll have to wait! ;)

I glaze, but this is way more than I would have patience for - yet the result is beautiful. It will also take a while for you to get all of the nuances of the shell itself - hope you get more time to work on it over the holidays.

Thanks Pat & Deb, I am hoping to get some more time to work on it this coming weekend. It is just so difficult when my job interfers with my painting - lol.

I am so impressed with your ability to glaze properly...I am way too impatient to work that long on the background alone.

Like the others have said, I will await the outcome of this. Like my Dad used to say..."take your time, but hurry up every chance you get"!
