Snow Leopard

There is a local art show that I need to finish this painting for starting Thursday.  So that means that I need to finish up today and frame it tomorrow before going back to work on Tuesday.  I have painted very few animals and this certainly has been a learning experience.  There are things that I would do differently but those can be tried on the next painting.  Any suggestions for a title?  Any minor changes that I can do quickly? I always appreciate critiques because that is part of the learning experience.  Thanks for looking.

Vicki,
I would not change anything on this great painting. The leopard's eyes and the textures on the stones are stunning. This painting will be a hit at the show on Thursday!
As for a title, try to think of something with " waiting, watching, feline, eyes etc..." such as "Watching You". I usually use such bland titles. I will curious to see what title you come up with.
Congratulations on a beautifully done artwork!

Thanks so much Christiane. You were thinking along the same lines that I was with the title. I should have mentioned when I posted this that the show is not a juried show for adult artist. So I am not up for any prizes or anything. The show is for our local students and they can participate and some small scholarship monies will be for them.

This painting is gorgeous and it looks finished to me. I like Christiane's ideas for a title, especially something with "waiting" in it. I really like this!

I'm going to be a tiny bit picky because the painting is gorgeous, but one thing kind of bothers me. Is the leopard behind that large rock, or resting his face on it? If he's resting on it, can you make a few pieces of fur overlap the edge of the rock? That's all, and by now he may already be framed! This is an amazing painting - hope you sell it! Title - "waiting . . "?????

Thank you Candy and Deb. I am liking "Waiting" for a title too. Deb you can be picky anytime with my paintings. The reference photo does not show an overlap but I think you are right in that it would look better and I think I can do that. I must go to town tomorrow morning to to get the glass cut so it will be tomorrow afternoon before it is untouchable. I appreciate the input.

If you have not painted animals much, you certainly have made a great result here. My only criticism (and all my students know I say this over and over again!!) I'd like to see more contrast in tone from the lightside of his face round to the area in shadow. Currently, the face looks a little flat to me and tonal contrast creates form. The markings are great and as for the eyes, watery liquid pools. Love the blues in the rocks as a great foil for his white coat. Hope you don't mind me expressing my thoughts - only did because you asked us to critique this work.

Joan I appreciate you taking the time to express your thoughts and while I don't have time to work more on this one I certainly will use the information to improve on future projects. My goal is for my work to get better. Thanks for your help.

Lovely work, and I'm beginning to think you can paint anything. I like the ideas given on making it even better but know you have a time limit know - so next time you can incorporate those. This will be a hit at the show, I know it! I like Hiding in Plain Sight...but Waiting works, too. Wonder what he or she is waiting for so patiently and quietly? Super work!

Thank you so much Rhonda.

Vicki...I have to agree with Rhonda that you can paint anything! I think I see the growth that shows you are painting shapes instead of objects, which is always wonderful to see.

I also agree with the others about more modeling shadows, but think the eyes alone sell this for me. You are good, girl!

Wow, thanks Susan. I would get the big head except that I know how often I used the trash bin - lol.

The snow leopard is a fantastic subject for you, Vicki! I love your choice of colors. As for the title, "The Hiding Place" comes to mind, I also like the word "waiting", suggested by others.
Good luck with your show!

Vicki, this is amazing the eyes really draw you in, nice composition and your "walk this way" is wonderful as well, the foam on the water, pattern on the dogs coat are dead on.
Nice job!
