New Cat WIP
Here is a new WIP and it is in the early stages. I have made a few minor changes to the reference photo, mainly changing the leaves on the left to include azalea blooms and the position of the top foot. The cat is beautiful and I hope to do him justice. This watercolor is 10x10 and is a 3/4 inch stretched watercolor paper canvas which will be varnished once completed.

A great beginning, Vicki. The texture of the wood is super.
When you say, " stretched watercolor paper canvas" do you mean a regular canvas wrapped with watercolor paper?
Yes, the wood is great, I am also wondering about your comment on the wc paper canvas!?
Thank you so much Christiane & Laura. I stretch my WC paper over stretcher bars (with no canvas) but my DH puts a thin (5.2 mm) plywood layer on the back for added protection and then I paint the stretcher bars and plywood with 2 coats of exterior paint before stretching the paper. I didn't like stretching my paper over canvas because when the paper is wet touching the canvas it dries differently and when adhered to a board it dries differently. Other than the plywood backing, painting and using 3/4 inch stretcher bars my process is like Joyce Faulknor's You Tube Video for stretching paper. I hope this helps answer your questions. If you need a picture let me know.
Thank you, Vicki, for the detailed information about the watercolor canvas. I have used the stretched over canvas method twice and was not entirely pleased with it; on the other hand, when I adhere the paper to a wood panel, the paint simply does not flow the same way. Next time, I will paint the watercolor before adhering to the wood panel...although I have ruined a 24" x 24" painting that way. Your method sounds great...but there is no handyman in my house:-)
If you watch Joyce Faulknor's You Tube video she does not use the extra plywood step so it is not necessary. I really like the surface to paint on. I have ruined several adhering them once painted but never a 24x24. That must have been traumatic.
I am loving this painting. The wood is just amazing!!! I too use the stretching method over canvas.
I really like it.
Thank you Sandra! I don't stretch over canvas - I just use the stretcher bars.
