Goodbye Sam

It is with great sadness that I write this post.  Sam our 9 year old bull dog went on a walkabout on New Years Eve and never returned.  He was a rescue dog and one of the best natured and sweetest dogs that we have ever owned.  He wasn't always real smart, in fact we joked that he had one brain cell and rarely ever used it but he was a sweetheart.
We miss him but especially Babe Girl is having a very difficult time.  He was already with us when we brought her home (another rescue) and she teethed on his ears and promptly henpecked him.  He always let her have her way and protected her and she is devastated.
Sam had a good life here with us and he so loved running free and swimming.  Bye Sam..........

Vicki, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It sounds like Sam was a great dog and luckily he had the good fortune of being rescued by someone who gave him the love he deserved. As an owner of 2 dogs my heart goes out to you.

Oh Vicki...the same thing happened to our Delilah after we had her for 16 years. I think that some animals sense when it is their time and separate themselves "from the herd". I am sorry if this turns out to be the case with Sam.

I know that you provided salvation for this dog when you rescued it and gave it a loving home. No animal, human or otherwise, can ask for more than the gift of love.

So very sorry to learn about Sam. We have four dogs, three are rescued. It is never easy to lose an animal friend. Perhaps he will come back...has just been on a bit of a "walkabout" as you said...enjoying an adventure.

I was sad to read your post. You have your find memories, but he might come back,. Just think of the Australian bomb squad dog who went missing over a year ago in Afghanistan, found recently on an exercise. She was taken in by a family. There is always hope.

Thanks Barbra Joan & Bella. I appreciate you guys. Babe Girl is at least eating better but still get very upset if we leave her to go to town.

Hi Vicki, was just reading about Sam. So sorry to hear he is lost. Just wondering if you are aware that on some breeds, older dogs may be prone to something similar to alzheimers in human. They call it old dog syndrome. Something my 10 year old pitbull suddenly developed a month or so before she passed away. A possible answer to the mystery of his disappearance. Dogs with ODS are often found wandering the area aimlessly, it is like a compulsion, and part of the problem is they can't remember how to get home. They become more docile and not violent and because of that let's just hope he is taken in by nice people and someday, he might wander back in your area again.
